About Cheney, WA

Cheney, WA is a historic college town known for its rodeo and Eastern Washington University. When classes are in session, the population in Cheney grows by several thousand with EWU students. Eagle pride is seen everywhere in Cheney. The community turns out in force for the university’s athletics, especially Eagle football games on the famous red field, with serious tailgate parties beforehand. The university and its students create a lively and energetic atmosphere in the city.

Lively also describes the annual Cheney Rodeo. The PRCA rodeo attracts cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country for bull riding, barrel racing, and other events. The city hosts a parade and other events during the rodeo weekend in July.

Cheney is near multiple lakes that provide plenty of activities from boating to fishing. The Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge borders the city. Turnbull encompasses more than 18,000 acres of grassland, wetlands, and wildlife habitat. It’s popular with bird watchers who like to spot the famous Turnbull Trumpeter Swans.

Children in Cheney attend schools in the Cheney School District, which also serves families in Airway Heights, WA. The district has about 5,000 students. Life in Cheney is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities. Downtown Main street has restaurants, breweries, and shops. The city has 7 parks as well as sports fields for children’s sports leagues.
